Penrhyn Castle
The National Trust, Bangor, Gwynedd

Built Thomas Hopper between 1820 and 1845 for the wealthy Pennant family on the profits of Jamaican sugar and Welsh slate, Penrhyn is a massive 19th century fantasy castle crammed with fascinating things including a 1-ton slate bed made for Queen Victoria and working Victorian Kitchens. This enormous neo-Norman castle sits between Snowdonia and the Menai Strait. Hopper also designed its interior with elaborate carvings, plasterwork and mock-Norman furniture. The castle contains an outstanding collection of paintings including 17thC Dutch & Spanish portraits; Rembrandt. The ‘below stairs’ Victorian kitchen and other servants’ rooms, including scullery, larders and chef’s sitting room, have been restored to reveal the preparations for the banquet for the Prince of Wales’ visit in 1894.
